TEARS BENEFITS FROM NATIONWIDE PEDIGREE CAMPAIGN
The Emma Animal Rescue Society (TEARS), one of the beneficiaries of the nationwide Pedigree "Help Us Help Dogs" campaign, received R50 277.00. This was presented by Pedigree campaign champion, Marc Lottering.
The campaign, launched in November last year, was aimed at highlighting the plight of neglected and unwanted dogs and raise funds for animal welfare shelters around the country. More than R600 000 was raised in just two months through the sale of Pedigree dog food, wristbands and an sms campaign.
TEARS chairperson, Marilyn Hoole, says, "We are thrilled to receive this donation from Pedigree which will be put towards replacing our worn-out vehicles. We are grateful to the public that contributed to the success of this campaign and to Pedigree for providing the fundraising platform."
TEARS has been rescuing, rehabilitating and re-homing abandoned, abused and neglected dogs and cats since 1999. It services a number of townships and informal settlements around Fish Hoek, Athlone and Durbanville in the Western Cape.
According to Hoole, TEARS also provides free primary health care and medical treatment for the pets of underprivileged families. This includes vaccinations, deworming and both external and internal parasite control. The organisation also offers free sterilisation to prevent unwanted puppies and kittens.
"Raising awareness of responsible pet ownership and instilling a respect for animals is a key focus of our activities. We have worked extremely hard to foster good working relationships with the communities we service to protect the rights of domestic animals and, to empower and support pet-owners through effective education, guidance and follow-up," says Hoole.
About TEARS
TEARS is managed by a committee of 6 members, who are intricately involved in the daily operations of the organisation. It also employs 20 full-time employees, who are assisted by a force of 40 active volunteers and 100 casual volunteers.
The organisation relies solely on donations and support from the public to fund its operations, as well as to feed, shelter and treat the animals in its care. On an average day, TEARS will house and care for 200 dogs and 130 cats.

SPCAs BENEFIT FROM NATIONWIDE PEDIGREE CAMPAIGN
The National Council of SPCAs is one of the beneficiaries of the nationwide Pedigree Help Us Help Dogs campaign that has received R184 351, presented by Pedigree campaign champion, Marc Lottering.
The campaign, launched in November last year, was aimed at highlighting the plight of neglected and unwanted dogs and to raise funds for animal welfare organisation around the country. More than R600 000 was raised in just two months through the sale of Pedigree dog food, funky wrist bands and an sms campaign.
NSPCA public relations manager Christine Kuch says, "We are delighted to receive this donation from Pedigree and congratulate the company on providing this inventive fundraising platform. In addition to being responsible and credible, the Pedigree initiative thoroughly demonstrated a sense of fun and belonging, as the advertisement says, "we're for dogs" and fun-loving pets are part of the bigger picture."
"As per our agreement with Pedigree at the outset of this campaign, the income received by the National Council of SPCAs will be re-distributed to individual SPCAs - those in greatest need of financial and moral support."
"We are grateful to the public who contributed to the success of this campaign and it is heartening to know that animal lovers continually come forward and show their kindness, recognising that there are animals in need and that helping them brings joy all around." says Kuch.
About the National Council of SPCAs
The National Council of SPCAs (NSPCA) was initiated in 1955 to provide a forum to bring uniformity to welfare standards and services. With 97 member Societies (the individual SPCAs) in South Africa, the NSPCA has responsibilities in terms of the SPCA Act which establishes locus standi of the NSPCA and the individual SPCAs to act on behalf of animals in South Africa.
In addition to the well-known animal welfare work of the organisation - which includes all species of animals - roles of the NSPCA include awareness campaigns, disaster response, community outreach, education, emergency relief, pro-active welfare work and researching the link between animal cruelty and human abuse.
